After 1 month of Destination Thailand Visa (DTV) issuance, we’ve seen a wide range of cases in various Thai embassies and consulate-generals requiring much more than the basic bullet-points listed on the official Thai website when they first announced the DTV launch.

Here are the bullet-points from the announcement in bold, and the reality of what is happening at various embassies and consulate-generals around the world:

Show THB500,000 minimum bank balance on a recent bank statement

  • Show bank statement with a minimum balance (or the equivalent of) THB500,000 over the past 3 months
  • AND/OR in some cases, show proof of monthly income over the past 3 months

Show employment contract or portfolio as proof of remote work or freelance status

  • Additional documentation showing proof of freelance status, such as client payments over the past 3 consecutive months, a tax return showing self-employed status
  • Additional documentation showing proof of remote worker permission, such as a letter from the employer, or letter from clients, confirming that the work the applicant is hired for can be performed remotely

Apply from a country where you can prove residence

  • In some cases residence can be a rental agreement, a recent bill from that location, or a bank account. In some locations, the Thai officials require legal residency, such as permanent residence (PR) in Hong Kong. Note: in some online forums we read that hotel accommodation has been sufficient, but we have not seen this yet in our cases

There is no Thai accommodation requirement in the basic bullet-point announcement

  • Some consulates are asking for proof of accommodation for the 180 days of stay in Thailand

It is imperative that you check with the Thai embassy or consulate-general where you plan to apply for the DTV for their unique requirements. Requirements are not uniform across all Thai Embassies and consulate-generals.

If you are planning on applying online, then make sure to check your eligibility by selecting the country of your passport and the country where you are applying from.
